Dartmoor – Wild Fires

Unfortunately we have had quite a few wild fires over the course of the last week.

On Wednesday (14 Apr) there was a large fire on Amicombe hill and DNP Rangers led to safety a team undertaking a DofE expedition who were shouting for help and stuck in the middle of it. Last night, on the south moor there was concern for 3 DofE teams who were running very late due to a large fire across Ter hill, Nakers hill, Green hill, Hand hill, Crane hill, Plym head and around Fox tor. In both of these instances all turned out safely I am glad to report.

Yesterday (20 Apr) a small fire was reportedly caused by a DofE team burning toilet paper (Police and myself have name of School) and they are investigating. The others, it is understood are potentially being started by arsonists and again Police are following up reports.

The dry spell is forecast to continue so it goes without saying to inform all Dartmoor users to remain very vigilant and take extreme care whilst undertaking any recreational activity.

Dartmoor Expedition Coordinator

TEN TORS 2010 – ESEYE

We have managed to obtain funding for the purchase of ESEYE Tracker system for all Ten Tors Team.  Unfortunately due to the late funding we cannot guarantee the arrival or use of the tracker system for 2010.  As a result all those who paid £25 for the use of ESEYE tracker will be refunded.

Our intention for the future use of the tracker system is as follows:
  • 2010:  If available, trackers will be issued to all 35, 45 and 55 mile teams during the Registration process together with the EMIT card, at ‘no cost’ to teams.  The system will be trialled but access to tracker information will be limited to Ten Tors Control.
  • 2011:  As a condition of entry all teams will be required to use the tracking system.  One tracker per team will be issued at the Ten Tors Briefing Day for use during pre-event training and during the actual Challenge.  The cost of hire will be £25 per tracker.
Details of the Tracker system will be fully briefed at the next Ten Tors Briefing Day in January 2011.

Ten Tors 2010 – Impact of saving Measures
There have been rumours circulating that Ten Tors 2010 will be affected by recent saving measures.  These are unfounded.  Please be assured that Ten Tors 2010 will take place as planned.

Planning for Ten Tors 2010 – 50th Anniversary is well underway.  Please ensure that you send your FTT1 (Rev 10) sooner rather than waiting for the closing date.
