Dartmoor: Rare Bird Nesting Areas

Updated 26-March-2007

As the result of a breeding bird survey during 2006, available at dartmoor-ranges.co.uk, we now know more accurately where the ring ouzel, golden plover and dunlin prefer to nest.  All Team Managers are to be aware that the out of bounds areas marked on the current Ten Tors map in brown have now been superseded by the detail on the map below.

To protect vulnerable birds during the breeding season, 1st March to 15th July, the shaded areas shown on the map below should be avoided.  If crossing an area is essential, use existing paths and tracks, and do not linger, picnic or camp.

It is emphasised that for the Ten Tors Training and the Challenge, routes are to be planned to avoid these areas, except for major tracks through them.
