We have a little more than thirty
Teams left on the Moor - we're off to the finish shortly to
cheer them over the line before it closes!

Updated:
With just under two hours to go
the cloud has gathered through the day and now it's fairly grey
- we might see some rain yet - but so far 265 Teams have
finished while a further eighty or so are past their tenth
Tor; I don't think a shower will bother them overmuch -
the welcome they're getting at the finish would warm
anyone. By now you'll probably have found the photos from
this morning - but we have more - to be uploaded as soon as we
can!

There's a great crowd at the
finish line now to welcome the Teams home, and they've had
plenty to applaud - so far over one hundred have finished, and
plenty more due over the horizon in the next half hour or
so. We're uploading photos, but there are loads and it'll
take a while yet...

We've seen about twenty Teams
through the finish gate so far - and another eighty or more have
passed their tenth Tor, so it's going to get busier very
shortly...

...no Team home yet, but they're
geting closer! The webcam has just gone live, so you should see
them coming in - and the fix to the latest times at Tors has
been applied, so new times should be correct...

Welcome
back
to
Ten
Tors - day two - your Teams are coming home!
We've been running updates overnight and we're scanning the
horizon for the first Team to appear. We aim to be at the
finish with cameras! The times from yesterday have all
been corrected overnight - but at present you'll see we're still
getting errant times this morning. The plan is to adjust
later times 'on the fly' on the Ten Tors MIS control system now
they know what the adjustments need to be - you'll get those
fixes as they're applied.

Updated:
We'll be here until all Teams are
showing as 'Camped'. We understand that the organisation
running the trackers will attempt to correct the timing data
overnight and a decision will be taken by the Event organisers
on whether to use this data or to input further data manually.
We're planning on leaving the updates running overnight - not
that too much will happen after about 20:00 (check the camping
rules, below...). We'll be here bright and early tomorrow for
the Teams' return - but spare them a thought tonight as they
ease out of their boots and rucksacks while you head for your
comfortable, warm beds - and if you can, be here tomorrow to
cheer them home!!

The Route cards are showing a few
of the Teams as '
Camping'
now, and a little explanation might be helpful:
- no Team may pass a Tor checkpoint after 20:00
- Teams on 35-mile Routes (A
to L) must camp at a manned checkpoint
- If the staff at a checkpoint calculate that a 35-mile Team
will not reach their next checkpoint before 20:00, the Team
will have to camp where they are
(A quick look at your Team's Route map should show why
they're camping where they are)
- Teams on 45- and 55-mile Routes (M - V and W
- Z) may pass a Tor checkpoint at any time before
20:00, then camp at any sensible point on their route
(Many 45- and 55-mile Teams will aim to clear one of their
checkpoints shortly before 20:00, then walk on into the
night before camping just short of their next Tor, ready for
an 06:00 start on Sunday morning)
- The final part of the Camping rules are that no Team may
pass its ninth Tor
(?!) on Day One of the Event

Updated:
While we've been a little
preoccupied, the Teams have been blissfully unaware of the
vagaries of technology and have been powering along their routes
- some have passed their Tor 8 - and the weather will have
helped them a little; the day started bright and blue but fresh,
then clouded over, threatening but failing to rain. Now
evening is almost with us a blue sky is breaking through and the
Teams should be able to make camp in the dry - if you're walking
it doesn't get any better!

There's good news, and bad...
Electronic updates from the Tors are back! But - attempts by the
tracker techies to mend the times that were an hour in the
future have resulted in new problems... Times from the following
tors are unreliable - but we do know that the teams have gone
through them:
Higher
Hartor
Black
Beardown
Oke
Hound
Chat
Watern
Trowlesworthy
Pupers Hill
Shilstone
Combestone
Please be assured that the problems are associated with the
tracker data. Your Teams on the ground are doing a great job!
Sat 14-May-2011 at 15:41:24 -
Updated:
The electronic forwarding of
'progreps' (Teams arrival times at Tors) is temporarily
broken... Teams are still passing through Tors but the data
isn't reaching the MIS server (or ours) at Okehampton
Camp. Mission Control here is going over to manual
collection and input of times direct from the Tors (as has been
in use for past years) - it means data will be a little slower
reaching us, but this is one of the Army's Ten Tors contingency
plans.

We're off to get some photos of
your Teams halfway down the Moor - thanks for all your emails so
far, we'll check them again when we get back. We'll leave the
updates on autopilot in the meanwhile!!

We're starting to see a few
fallouts on the Route cards - these appear as letters in the '
Fallouts & Status'
column on the Cards. If these apply to your Team, follow
this link for an
explanation. Essentially a letter (representing a Team
member) in the Status column of a Route Card means that the
individual is safe and is in the recovery system, on their way
back to Okehampton and their Team Manager.

Updated:
The Tors (eg Kitty) which are
reporting Team arrival times in the future have caused a lot of
Teams to be showing yellow highlights on their Route cards -
please ignore these. The crew running the tracker system
are working hard to fix the basic fault, and once the times are
corrected the Route cards will automatically clear.

Updated:
More gremlins, this time at Kitty
Tor - we don't yet know why, but they're not sending Team times
back to base, so we have blank times for that Tor while the
Teams move on to the next Tor checkpoint on their routes.
Meanwhile after a beautiful start to the day we have more cloud
building up - it'll keep the Teams cool as they head out across
the Moor, but they'll possibly see a shower later on...

Updated:
You've probably noticed that some
of the times on the Route cards are an hour ahead of reality.
Just a minor issue with some of the newer tracker devices at the
Tor checkpoints. This is being worked on as I type - hopefully
to be fixed soon... don't you just love technology?

The Teams were released on their
routes from the massed start a few minutes ago on a beautifully
clear morning under a glistening sky, and we'll post '
Photos' on the link opposite as
soon as we can. You'll be eager to see when they reach
(and they'll be eager to get to) their first Tor checkpoints.
The web site is linked directly to the Ten Tors control
system and we'll have regular updates (every ten minutes or so)
detailing the Teams' progress - you'll have the information as
soon as it's reached us! Please see the
Help...
link for some more detailed information on 'times at Tors'.
The Tor closest to the start is Oke Tor, about 4km from the
start, and is visited by four routes on the outward journey.
The Teams on the 45-mile
Route T
are likely to reach it just ahead of their 35-mile colleagues,
at around 07:45 - you'll have time for coffee and toast while
the Teams storm towards their first checkpoints - breakfast for
them will already be a distant memory...

Photos from around the camp today
have just been posted - the weather seems to promise a showery
evening for Okehampton's tented township, but the morning should
be clear for their sendoff. We'll be here to track them
through every Tor throughout their weekend!

The updates will be running
unmanned into the evening - the front page timestamp won't
change but the Allteams, Update and Route pages will as they're
updated. I'm off to get some photos!

Updated:
There are about fifty more Teams
to register out of four hundred, if you've been watching the
Allteams list - quite a queue for scrutineering last time I
passed it, but they've got hours yet. Jubilee registration is
going well and so far the weather is obeying the Met Office's
directives - that'll be rain later then...

How to Find Your Team - a
rough guide to
Team Codes:
The best place to start is the 'all the
Teams'
page. This has every Team listed in alphabetic order, so
finding the one(s) you're interested in should be easy.
This site doesn't have access to details of team member names,
so I'm afraid we can't help there.
The 'all
Teams' list has, at the
start of each line, the Team's unique identifier throughout the
Event (This is the 'Code' entry, consisting of one alphabetic
and four numeric characters, eg
Z2601) - each Team member literally wears these
numbers for two days - click on the alphabetic character to see
the
Route card which
will detail all the Teams' times at each of their Tor
checkpoints as the weekend progresses. If you'll be using
the 'Team
Status' tracking
page to follow your Team across the Moor, this code will save
you typing their full name.
The web site is now in full 'Event mode' - the
Route cards are also
accessible from 'The
Routes'
link on the index frame opposite; click there, select the
distance your Team is walking, then your Team's alphabetic Route
letter (
A
to
Z).
The Route cards, together with the 'all
Teams' and 'Team
Update'
lists will be updated every ten minutes or so over the weekend,
and they're all time-stamped so you'll know how recently they
were updated - but bear in mind that it takes a good deal longer
than ten minutes for any Team to walk between checkpoints!
If you'll be using your
mobile
phone, the data there will be derived as you request it
from the 'All Teams' page - you'll get the latest information
available.

Five days to go!! Weather
for Ten Tors weekend - according to my handy seaweed and pine
cone kit, which was sold to me as completely reliable (?!) -
looks to be cool and partly cloudy on Saturday, but fairly
chilly overnight, while Sunday should be similar but with a
chance of showers. No sign of a plague of frogs,
apparently... Not bad walking weather if it pans out this

Just about a week to go!
From Thursday 12th May this site will go live from Okehampton
Camp, covering first the registration of the Teams as they
begin to arrive, then at 10:00 on Friday the crucial
allocation of Routes to Teams. Saturday morning at 07:00
will see the start of Ten Tors 2011, and we'll be here to post
the times at Tors as the Teams storm their way across the Moor
throughout the weekend.
You might think that the allocation of different Routes to
different Teams is a bit confusing... Isn't this
supposed to be about
ten tors?
There are in fact
nineteen
tor checkpoints spread across the Moor. To avoid
the Event being the relatively simple (?!) exercise of two
thousand four hundred souls following each other from tor to
tor, Teams are allocated to one of twenty-six Routes (A to Z)
to follow, so there are roughly sixteen Teams per Route, and
each Route visits a different combination of Ten of the
nineteen Tor checkpoints.
To help with all that there are now a few more options on the
left-hand frame:
|
|
which will list all the
Teams and their latest checkpoints |
|
|
which will list status
changes over the last 15 minutes |

on the Moor |
|
|
find that vital piece
of information on the site |
|
|

May, when Ten Tors 2011 begins to come together!!
