INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS OF FULL PAPERS

This year we propose to pre-publish papers on CD only, the expense of a print volume being considered an unnecessary burden on registration fees. However, we wish to maintain the standards of previous Symposia volumes and therefore ask you to heed these instructions when submitting full texts.

Your paper should not be longer than 10 pages A4, including references and all appendices; manuscripts exceeding this limit will be shortened by the copy editor under guidance from the referees. Please upload your paper on your 'User Home' page on the BHS Symposium website http://www.events.exeter.ac.uk/bhs2008/index.php/bhs/2008/presenter. The preferred word-processing package is Microsoft Word: please include an ASCII version if you use other WP software.

Text

The paper text should be written in A4 paper size with the minimum text font size of 12 pt. The recommended font type is Times New Roman. Minimum margins are as follows: left: 2.5 cm, right: 2.0 cm, top/bottom: 1.5 cm. Paper text should be fully justified.
Please list all authors immediately below the paper title, followed by their affiliations, identified by numbered superscripts.
Do not use all capital letters in titles, captions, etc. (Table 1, not TABLE 1).
Please refer to figures and tables as "Figure 3 and Table 4" (not Fig. 3 and Tab. 4) and to equations as "Equation (1)").
Do not use initial capital letters in titles and sub-heads except at the start or for a proper noun.
Do not use underline or bold type in subheads (the DTP programme being used for final file production does all the formatting automatically). Use italic for emphasis in the text.
Symbols must be a single character with superscripts/subscripts if necessary.
Units should be SI. Use indices rather than oblique lines (m3 s-1 not m3/s).
Explain abbreviations, acronyms and initials at first occurrence.

Figures

Not more than six per paper, please. Originals will probably exist as either hard copy or will have been composed using Excel or Powerpoint. Please useTimes New Roman font with 12 pt minimum size. Please feel free to embed the figures within the document but it would help if you attach separate electronic files so that if any adjustments or alterations need to be made, these can be executed within the original file. In any case, please note that Powerpoint is a presentation package only and is not designed for print so all such figs need to be saved in .tiff or .jpeg format (listed in the 'Save As' options). PDF, .emf or .eps files are also acceptable.
Captions should be placed below the figure. You can include these in the text to show your preferred positioning or as a separate list.

Tables

Again, not more than six per paper, please. Use tabs to position data into columns, rather than using word-processing table formats, as the DTP system to be used does not recognise any of the WP codes and will therefore lose all the spacing. Captions should in times New Roman, 12pt and should be placed above the table. Use italic for column headings. Please do not use vertical ruling in tables.

Equations

Please indent one tab for equations and number them consecutively on the right-hand side of the page (the production editor will insert paper numbers as appropriate). If you use Word Equation Editor, note that our DTP package treats the whole equation as a graphic, so no changes can be made once it is embedded in the text (therefore please double-check that the equations are correct!)
